What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin placeholder text used in design and typesetting since the 1500s. It comes from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum by Cicero (45 BC), deliberately scrambled so readers focus on the visual layout rather than the content.

The classic opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." — has been the standard dummy text for print layout, web design, and UI mockups for decades. It looks like real text at a glance, which makes wireframes and prototypes far more convincing than blocks of repeated characters or "content here" placeholders.

When to Use It

UI and web design mockups

Fill cards, sidebars, and content areas with realistic-looking text to test layouts before real content is ready.

Print and editorial design

Lay out magazine spreads, brochures, and reports with placeholder text to check spacing, columns, and typography.

Component development

Feed realistic text into React, Vue, or Angular components while building them, without waiting for real copy.

Email template design

Fill email templates with varying paragraph lengths to ensure they render correctly across email clients.

Presentation slides

Placeholder body copy in slide decks that lets reviewers focus on structure and flow, not unfinished wording.

Performance and load testing

Generate large volumes of text to stress-test rendering performance or fill database seed scripts.
